The fantasy economics of war | The fiscal magicians of right and left are urging Rachel Reeves to protect people from world oil prices – with their own money. The TaxPayers' Alliance and the FairFuelUK campaign want the chancellor to cut taxes on petrol and diesel to moderate the rise in pump prices. Clive Lewis, of the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs, has joined in, echoing Kemi Badenoch's call to cancel the fuel duty increase planned for September. Badenoch and Reeves have been trading blows in The Independent (see below), but none of the chancellor's critics has explained who should pay for this generous tax relief, from which the rich would benefit more than the poor. The Independent's editorial on Saturday urged the chancellor to stand firm in targeting help on those who need it most. | |
