Editor’s Pick: Apple escalates crackdown on AI app builders

Greetings,

Apple's decision to remove the vibe coding app, Anything, from its App Store marks a turning point in how the company is handling a fast-emerging category of AI-powered software tools.

We reported earlier that Apple had begun blocking updates from these apps, which allow users to generate software without a traditional coding experience. Now, by removing one entirely, Apple is signaling a firmer stance. The company cited its long-standing rule against apps executing unreviewed code—highlighting growing tension between platform control and a new wave of AI-driven development that can rapidly create and modify apps.

Why it caught my eye:

  • A line drawn on AI-generated software: Apple is enforcing Guideline 2.5.2 to prevent apps from introducing new functionality without review, directly challenging how vibe coding tools operate.
  • A fast-growing category at risk: Tools like Anything have already enabled users to publish thousands of apps, suggesting a surge in software creation that Apple may now be trying to contain.
  • Bigger implications for competition: These tools don't just create apps—they could compete with Apple's own developer ecosystem, while also raising questions about how closed platforms govern new forms of software.

This is one of the clearest signs yet that the next phase of AI isn't just about building tools—it's about who gets to control where and how they're used.

Apple Kicks Vibe Coding App Out of App Store, Escalating Crackdown

Apple appears to have escalated its crackdown on vibe coding by recently booting one such app out of its App Store for violating its rules.

Last Thursday, Apple removed the app, Anything, from the App Store, according to Dhruv Amin, co-founder and CEO of the eponymous startup that makes the app. Apple's action came a week after The Information reported that the company had blocked updates of vibe coding apps—which use AI to allow people without coding experience to create apps—while allowing earlier versions of those apps to remain in the App Store.
