Should you declare earnings on Vinted, eBay or Etsy? |
As you start clearing out your closets and cupboards this spring, it's the perfect time to think about selling unwanted items on platforms such as Vinted, eBay and Etsy – but it's important to know where you stand with the tax rules in the UK. Casual sales of your personal belongings (such as clothes, toys or gadgets you no longer use) usually aren't considered 'trading', so you won't need to declare the income to HM Revenue & Customs – especially if the total proceeds stay at £1,000 or less in a tax year, due to the UK's trading allowance. However, if you're regularly buying and reselling items to make a profit and exceed the £1,000 threshold, you may need to register as self‑employed and declare your earnings.
