Starmer: boo to Trump; hurrah for the EU | The prime minister held a news conference to say that Yvette Cooper, the foreign secretary, will chair a meeting of 35 countries that want to "go and get their own oil", in Donald Trump's words, through the Strait of Hormuz. Only they don't want to do it until "after the fighting has stopped", Keir Starmer said. We may find out more about when that might be when President Trump speaks in the US at 2am tonight our time. Last night, he said America could stop the war in "two weeks, maybe three", but that is just Trumpspeak for "soon". Starmer also announced a new EU summit to push for an even closer UK-EU relationship on "defence, security, energy and the economy" – which sounded like a strong tilt towards the EU and away from America after Trump threatened (again) to ditch Nato. It is a tilt that will please many Labour people, but may not impress the wider electorate, I wrote. | |
