There's no escaping it now for America's Catholics and other members of the various Christian denominations: Trump has a God problem.
More specifically, he is picking beefs with major religious leaders at a time when he should, seemingly, be doing everything he can to hold his voting coalition together.
Evangelicals and younger Christians were an important part of Trump's voting bloc in 2024.
But now the president of the United States finds himself in an unprecedented position: Openly feuding with the Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church. And the first American one, to boot.
And then there's the drawing.
Trump was not, to be clear, in the greatest of spots with younger members of his MAGA coalition before this whole debacle. The war with Iran is seen by many younger Republican voters as a quicksand pit into which Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu dragged the Trump administration, haplessly or involuntarily.
But it was the posting of an AI-generated image depicting the president as Jesus from Trump's own Truth Social account — and the following attempts to explain it — that have even triggered angry responses from prominent MAGA tent members like Laura Loomer and Riley Gaines.
On Thursday, Pope Leo XIV seemed to up his criticism of the U.S. president (though not by name) as he spoke in Cameroon.
“The world is being ravaged by a handful of tyrants, yet it is held together by a multitude of supportive brothers and sisters,” he said.
