All eyes were on the north-west today, as Andy Burnham officially kicked off his crucial by-election campaign in Makerfield.
The 'King of the North' set out his vision for parliament - and potentially No 10 - in front of cheering Labour supporters at a local community and sports club.
He did not shy away from positioning his by-election fight as a stepping stone for an overhaul of the Labour Party, telling the crowd: "A vote for me in this by-election is a vote to change Labour".
The Manchester mayor was keen to pitch himself as a local man, reminiscing about going to his first Everton away game without his dad in 80s, and telling voters he could walk to the campaign centre from his house.
But will it be enough to fight off Reform in the area they made massive gains in just weeks ago? Only time will tell.

The 70,000 voters of Makerfield hold the future of Labour in their hands – but any party would be stupid to take their support for granted, writes former resident Kay Burley, who knows what issues drive them

- The government has been accused of mimicking Donald Trump’s America after newly-published guidance confirmed single-sex services must be on the basis of biological sex, sparking concerns that trans people will be pushed out of public life.
- The Green Party’s former candidate in the Makerfield by-election – who pulled out of the race just hours after he was announced – has apologised after it was reported he had shared a post calling an attack on Jewish ambulances in north London a “false flag”.

I wrote about the launch of the mayor of Greater Manchester’s by-election campaign in Makerfield.
Given that he is is bidding to replace a prime minister who disappointed people because he offered the empty promise of “change”, I thought we were entitled to more than another empty promise of “change”, this time with an easier manner and a northern accent.

‘How will this get me back to work?’ Readers fear sick note shake-up
|
As the government trials sweeping changes to the fit note system – including replacing some GP-issued sick notes with referrals to work and health coaches – our community have shared fears that the reforms could leave seriously ill people without proper medical support while trying to stay in work.
Here’s what you had to say:

A return, if possible, to being fit and healthy enough to work 9–5, Monday to Friday, for example, is BEST assisted by the NHS.
The DWP know nothing about a person's health and legally should NOT KNOW anything about the very personal details of one's injury, illness, etc – not even if it is acute or chronic.
Medical is NHS and only NHS.

I suffered an extreme attack of sciatica two years ago. No way in hell I could work as a bus driver. Tried to go back on a couple of occasions but the pain was too intense. Only returned after almost four months off. Still suffering the after-effects today. How in hell they think they could have got me back sooner – heaven help those in similar situations....
