Voters are still going to the polls in Makerfield, meaning Andy Burnham has to wait until the early hours of Friday to find out whether or not he has won the seat.
It is no exaggeration to say this is potentially the most consequential by-election in decades.
The result could potentially decide the UK’s next prime minister and the direction of travel for this country for at least the next few years.
The Independent will be bringing you full coverage through the night, with Athena Stavrou keeping you updated as the votes are counted. Read it all here.
After a by-election that has featured plumbers, Hugh Grant, allegations of sexism, calls to apologise to Carol Vorderman and demands Keir Starmer quit, finally we are just hours away from knowing the result.

This is the real reason Keir Starmer wants to cling on – he’s terrified Ed Miliband will get to be chancellor

The energy secretary is reported to be poised to lead a wave of resignations next week to try to force Keir Starmer out. I have written that I do not think that the energy secretary will resign, but that the prime minister is not paranoid, because Andy Burnham really is out to get him.
The one thing that ought to stop Burnham, if he wins tonight, however, would be if he indicated that he intends to appoint Ed Miliband as his chancellor.

Oxfordshire Council seeks to ban England flags from street lampposts

In the sixties and early seventies, this was not a problem.
Then, we were like normal countries, in that the Union flag was simply flown by decent, proud Brits.
Since then, it has been claimed by the BNP, The National Front and football yobs.
That's how we have arrived at this ludicrous situation.

Starmer activates legacy mode while Farage activates Substack |
This week, Keir Starmer announced a ban on social media for under-16s. It’s a punchy policy announcement. And it’s a clear sign that he has activated legacy mode. Today, we ask: what will his legacy really look like? And why are prime ministers obsessed about their legacy?
