It turns out by-elections are a bit like the old cliche about buses: you wait ages for one, and then two come along at once. Or could it be three?
Nigel Farage has grabbed the headlines again this afternoon with his dramatic decision to quit as an MP and fight to retake his seat.
The Reform leader appeared to be trying to seize the initiative, accusing his opponents of using parliamentary sleaze investigations against him as a “political tool”.
He again insisted he had done nothing wrong over a £5m gift from a crypto billionaire and support provided by convicted fraudster George Cottrell.
But he also confirmed reporting by The Independent’s political editor David Maddox that he had considered walking away from politics.
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, meanwhile, accused him of having a “hissy fit” and cracking under pressure.
And what of a third possible by-election?
The standards probe into Mr Farage has been paused now that he has quit as an MP. But it will resume if he wins the seat again – and the outcome of that investigation could trigger a chain of events leading to another by-election in Clacton.
