Reform donations under more scrutiny |
As Nigel Farage's party finds itself stuck in third place in the polls once again, more information about Reform UK's donations has come to light.
The Independent's analysis of data from the Electoral Commission shows an astonishing 80 per cent of donations to Reform UK in the past 12 months have come from donors or companies recently based overseas.
In comparison, Labour and the Conservatives received just 0.15 per cent and 3.57 per cent of their donations from people or companies based abroad during the same period.
While there is no suggestion of any illegal activity, the scale of Reform’s donations from overseas backers has put their financial affairs back in the spotlight.
Meanwhile, the party is continuing to struggle in the polls, leaving them in third place behind Labour and the Tories.
It follows a string of scandals which have seen Mr Farage investigated by the parliamentary standards commissioner over a £5m donation from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne.

Political editor David Maddox looks at how Andy Burnham has ducked serious scrutiny in his first 100 days as PM and how the collapse in support for Reform could force him to call an early election

Like it or not, Andy Burnham is changing the weather on the Brexit debate – much like a certain cartoon-ish PM who came before him, writes Simon Walters

You can come out from behind the sofa – a prime minister is actually now willing to make the case that temporary, circular European migration might just have been a sensible policy after all, says Ava Santina

What else you need to know

- The UK is said to already be holding talks with the EU about a possible return to freedom of movement after Burnham reopened the debate on membership.
- Downing Street has hinted that Harry Kane could be in the running for a knighthood for his “extraordinary achievement” of winning the Ballon d’Or.
- The Labour government has been urged to correct the "mistake" of privatising Royal Mail by bringing the service back into public hands, a former senior minister has argued.

Iain Dale, the Tory pundit, thinks the prime minister is likely to go for a snap election on 10 December.
I disagree with him, just as I disagreed with Kemi Badenoch when she mischievously predicted an election before Christmas.
It is true that Andy Burnham may never be as popular as he is now, and that the opposition parties are in disarray, but why would a prime minister with a majority of 167 and two-and-a-half years on the clock risk it all on an election fought on a promise to raise taxes and reopen Brexit?
