| Hello, and welcome to another Independent voices roundup. This week Labour held its party conference in Liverpool, which saw the government set out its vision for the future of Britain. Andrew Grice argued that Starmer is right to tackle benefits reform, even though it may earn him no points with his party, while Joe Murphy wrote that the PM's speech was a "banger" (despite an unfortunate slip of the tongue). Meanwhile our editorial said the PM's speech set out a vision for a brighter future. Elsewhere, I explained why Angela Rayner's "Queen of the North" act has won me over, and Emma Clarke said that the deputy PM is not quite the working class hero she makes herself out to be. |

- John Rentoul: The hounding of Keir Starmer is exactly what the right-wing media wants
- Alan Rusbridger: What does the future of The Spectator look like with Gove at the helm?

| There's a lot of 'rush to judgment' going on around here. Tories = 14 years of doing nothing except buffoonery (Johnson, Rees-Mogg) idiocy (Truss, Dorries) unenlightened self interest and making things worse (plenty of data to support that if you can be bothered to look) Labour = less than three months which in political terms is no time to make any noticeable difference. |

| They are clearly more competent and well-intentioned than the last rabble, but the winter fuel debacle does feel like an unnecessary, unforced error and the 'freebies' farrago is just a bit politically naive. |

| | "Just as pregnant women have the choice of a natural birth or a high-tech delivery, most people want terminally ill people to be able to choose the manner of their death," A Wills writes to The Independent. Do you agree? Read the full letter here. Last week, 75 per cent of you agreed with Steve Edmondson and said no politician should take personal gifts. That's that settled then. | |
