One of the most incredible parts of being a journalist is when people let you into their lives a little bit, and entrust you with their stories.
I was so grateful last week to be welcomed into the homes of a few residents of Chuckanut Village for this story. These people cross a bridge to access their homes, and they'll have to move if the city opts to not replace that bridge.
Wayne Gerner and Laura Mackenzie invited us into their home, which is Wayne's family's original homestead in Bellingham. His grandfather purchased the house in 1917. Seeing photos of Wayne's family members lining the walls made it sink in how much history is in that home. It was clear to me that the idea of moving seemed out of the question for Wayne and Laura.
There's more to come on this story as the city reconsiders its options after public pressure. I'll be closely following this story, to detail future solutions city staff come up with, their pros and cons, and the solution the Bellingham City Council ultimately chooses.
