| Good morning, everyone, I'm sure many of you have already read the controversial comments made by Tory leadership hopeful Kemi Badenoch regarding autism and mental health. Her remarks have sparked widespread criticism, including a strong rebuke from Claire Murdoch, the NHS's national mental health director, who responded sharply on X/Twitter. If you'd like to dive deeper, our columnist James Moore has provided an insightful perspective on why Badenoch's comments reflect a concerning trend. Last week, I wrote about the health disparities faced by women, whose pain is often dismissed or ignored. This week, my colleague Maya has continued to shine the spotlight on this issue, and has published an eye-opening story about why women are less likely to receive CPR. In other news, a young woman shared with me her heartbreaking story of self-blame after the death of her baby, revealing how a scandal-hit hospital covered up its staff's fatal errors for a decade. |

| What would you do if the NHS told you it would take 10 years to receive treatment and care? This is the reality for many adults who have been referred to NHS ADHD services. This week, the Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust announced that it would have to stop accepting new referrals, as the 4,500 patients already on its list face waiting times of over a decade just for an assessment. This isn't an isolated case — several NHS trusts have had to close their waiting lists in recent months due to soaring demand. Even some private providers have had to stop accepting new referrals. While not everyone on these lists will ultimately receive a diagnosis, at the heart of this crisis are adults in desperate need of support for conditions that can significantly affect their daily lives. Interestingly, the Leeds and York Partnership Foundation Trust admitted that it is funded to conduct just 16 ADHD assessments per month, yet receives a staggering 170 referrals. Is the root of the problem a mismatch between NHS funding and the actual demand for services? The answer is often yes. Those familiar with the sector might be aware of the NHS taskforce aimed at addressing the pressures on ADHD and autism services. While this effort might help in the long term, in the short term, the shortage of specialists remains a critical challenge. I'm keen to understand the impact of all this on individuals. If any Health Check readers would like to share their experiences, please reach out to me using the email address below. | |
| Do you think weight-loss jabs can reduce unemployment? | |
| Unemployed people will be given weight-loss jabs to assist them back into work in a trial. "The long-term benefits of these drugs could be monumental in our approach to tackling obesity. For many people, these jabs will be life-changing, help them get back to work and ease the demands on our NHS," health secretary Wes Streeting wrote in The Telegraph. What do you think? Last week, I asked Health Check readers if they had ever spotted people smoking on hospital grounds. Worryingly, more than half of you (57%) said yes. | |
| As debate still rages over HRT, many women are looking for complementary solutions to hormone therapy or alternatives if they can't take it for medical reasons. Alice Smellie, health expert and co-founder of Menopause Mandate, is one such woman – and has spent the last six months looking at what exercise and diet changes work best for in midlife. | | |
| When she was younger, loneliness seemed to be a problem reserved for older people, but at just 28 years old, Chanté Joseph realised that she, like many of her peers, was suffering from a deep feeling of disconnection. It wasn't dates they needed, it was real mates. So she tried to do something about it… | | |
