Something wrong in Tory HQ |
Post-PMQ briefings when the Conservatives were in power saw Labour comms chief Matthew Doyle and his deputies armed with a response to almost every story of the day - confidently walking lobby hacks through their plans for power. Under Kemi Badenoch, her spokesman shows up week after week lacking answers and refusing to spell out what the Tories would do differently.
On Wednesday, Ms Badenoch's spokesman made the stunning admission that he "hadn't spoken to" his boss about tariffs, while the rest of the country held its breath to see what is in store for Britain from Donald Trump's "Liberation Day".
He was also unable to say whether the Tories would vote against Sir Keir Starmer's Chagos Islands deal, despite saying there are no terms under which the party would support giving the islands away. Something is wrong in Tory HQ. |

Our political commentator Andrew Grice on what to look out for |
The Commons will sit from 9.30am, starting with culture, media and sport questions. It will debate a statement from the housing select committee on the crisis in temporary accommodation. Followed by two backbench debates, on the impact of digital platforms on democracy (led by Sorcha Eastwood, of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland) and on access to sport and PE in schools (led by Leigh Ingham, Labour).
The Public Accounts Committee will take evidence on local government financial sustainability, from 10am.
Labour will launch its local election campaign. Expect it to feature the claim that council tax is lower under Labour councils, but not the explanation that Labour councils tend to have more homes in lower council-tax bands.
Nato foreign ministers will meet in Brussels. |
