Once a week, I get to write our newsletter intro. It's a rare moment as a boots-on-the-ground journalist to provide more voice and — occasionally — an opinion.
Last week, a reader was struck by what they saw as a lack of balance in my newsletter about the PeaceHealth strikes. I appreciated them giving me the chance to explain.
I start reporting on a story by seeking various sides of an issue. I want to hear and understand. The further down the process I go, the more clarity I gain on the topic as I remove ambiguity, misinformation and motive-driven distortions.
In seeking the truth, it's nearly impossible not to develop an educated opinion on the topic. That opinion, however, does not receive column inches in a news story, nor should it.
My opinion is rarely exciting. It tends to be that an issue is "complicated."
