It's coming down to the wire as the House of Representatives is poised for a final vote this week on a budget reconciliation package — Donald Trump's "one, big, beautiful bill".
We're getting as tired of typing those words as you are of reading them.
Nevertheless, it's finally coming to a head: the House Rules Committee will vote tonight after midnight to advance the legislation to the floor.
The speaker of the House projected confidence as he spoke to reporters Tuesday afternoon.
"We've got a number of loose ends to tie up, but they're coming together well," Mike Johnson said. We are very confident, very optimistic we get this done."
Johnson still has two final hurdles to pass, however. Lawmakers in both the House Freedom Caucus and SALT caucus were still threatening to tank the bill as of Tuesday evening.
"We're in a better spot than we were a week ago. We're in a better spot than we were even 48 hours ago, but there's still a lot of things we're hammering out," Chip Roy, a Freedom Caucus member, told reporters Tuesday evening outside the Capitol.
The speaker called for backup on Tuesday, summoning the president to Capitol Hill to bully Republicans into line. But at a news conference, Donald Trump spent much of his focus on another subject: his effort to delegitimize Joe Biden's presidency, buoyed by reporting of the former president's decline in a book which released on Tuesday.
