Good morning!
The big question on everyone's mind this week: how safe are weight-loss jabs like Mounjaro and Ozempic? An estimated 1.5 million people in the UK are currently using these medications – that's about 4 per cent of households – and NHS medical director Sir Stephen Powis has suggested they could soon become the most commonly prescribed drugs.
But concerns have emerged. Just days after Mounjaro became available at GP surgeries across England, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced an investigation into 294 reported cases of acute and chronic pancreatitis linked to tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Mounjaro) and semaglutide, used in Ozempic and Wegovy. So what do we really know about the long-term use of these drugs? If you missed it, catch up with Leah Hardy's report here.
Of course, there are healthier, more traditional alternatives. If you're looking to lose weight and get fitter the old-fashioned way, we've got you covered. From tackling visceral belly fat to managing stress and building lean muscle, Harry Bullmore speaks to a longevity doctor who shares four key behaviours to help you live healthily for as long as possible. If you're short on time or motivation for a full workout, the good news is you don't have to commit to a long run or an intense HIIT session to feel better. Stretching can be a powerful, mood-boosting alternative – relieving sore muscles and giving your mind a much-needed break. It's easy to do and, according to a flexibility expert, there are the five stretches you should be doing every day. Even better? The whole routine takes just seven minutes.
And finally, in a world obsessed with weight-loss jabs, there's a growing appetite for embracing fat – the good kind. Hannah Twiggs explores how full-fat foods are making a comeback, with Waitrose reporting rising sales of full-fat yoghurt and whole milk. More people are turning away from ultra-processed products in favour of whole, natural ingredients – and they're not wrong to do so. Here's what the science says about the benefits of a full-fat diet.
Have a great weekend!
