It's worth adding that this problem extends beyond the US. There is a reason why many of the most economically unequal countries include South Africa, Namibia, and much of the Americas. European countries gained a huge chunk of their wealth from colonialism (but we can focus on past slavery for this point) or through beneficial economic agreements, such as membership of the EU or the European Free Trade Association, with countries that did these things. My husband is from a non-EU country that hopes to join the EU, primarily due to economic reasons. The money from slavery did not stay in the countries where people were enslaved. Wealthy countries' health care systems and educational institutions exist in their current state due to the profits of slavery and the exclusion of slaves from benefiting from these institutions. Just because hoarding wealth at a national level is socially acceptable doesn't mean it's inherently ethical. There have been a lot of things that were socially acceptable but not ethical throughout human history. –Rose via our website |
