From the newsroom

As evidenced by the changing leaves and cloudy mornings, this week marks the official start of autumn. Fall is my favorite season, so it should come as no surprise that I'm already planning the Living section for our Halloween paper (which, coincidentally, hits news stands Oct. 31).

This year, I'm looking for a local fiction writer to pen a 500-word spooky story, set here in Bellingham.

That said, Halloween is still more than a month away. In the near future, this weekend is the ninth annual Bellingham SeaFeast festival. The free two-day celebration is "dedicated to honoring our rich maritime culture," from commercial fishing industries to Coast Salish heritage and conservation efforts. Oh, and did I mention the abundance of fresh seafood?

In other A&E news, Black Noise Records has a record fair and swap from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Aslan Depot. Kulshan Trackside is hosting an '80s-themed dance party for Lydia Place this evening; tonight is also the very last Fryday Fish Fry at Boundary Bay Brewery.

In the mood for a more low-key weekend excursion? Now is the perfect time to pay a visit to MJ's Martini Bar, newly opened in the former Fireside Martini and Wine Bar space on West Bakerview Road. The bar/restaurant combo makes an ideal venue for cozying up as temperatures begin to drop.
