Keir Starmer finds his wartime voice | The prime minister looked as relaxed at Prime Minister's Questions today as he had done sitting next to Rachel Reeves as she delivered the spring statement yesterday. It was as if his confidence had been boosted by Donald Trump saying he was no Churchill – music to the ears of Labour backbenchers, who queued up to praise Keir Starmer's "leadership" and "cool head" on Iran. He told Kemi Badenoch that he was not prepared to "join a war unless I was satisfied there was a lawful basis and a viable, thought-through plan". No one is really interested in the finer points of international law, but Labour MPs – and the British people – are very much of the view that Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu lack a viable, thought-through plan. Badenoch, who is on the wrong side of public opinion on this, therefore came off worse from her exchanges with the prime minister. | |
