Starmer braced as Britain heads to the polls |
After months of speculation and campaigning, the day is finally here.
Millions of voters across the country are heading to the polls today, to have their say in local council, Senedd and Holyrood elections.
Strict broadcast and publishing rules mean that polling news may have been quiet - but buzz around the results remains in the air.
Leaders of all the major political parties made sure they were pictured heading to their own local polling stations to cast their ballots this morning in a bid to encourage their supporters to get out themselves.
Sir Keir Starmer walked hand-in-hand with his wife Lady Victoria Starmer to cast their votes at Westminster Chapel, but did not respond when asked by reporters how he was feeling and if he would resign if the Labour Party performs poorly.
The elections are expected to be the toughest test of Sir Keir’s premiership yet, amid rife speculation they could trigger a leadership challenge in the days to come.

The former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has realised that people treat vapers differently – and so has ditched her habit in order to take over from Keir Starmer, says Ava Vidal

Tom Watson, the former junior minister who helped topple Tony Blair, hit the nail on the head when he urged Labour MPs to stop plotting to remove Keir Starmer. He’s right, of course – but can anything be done to shut down the damaging leadership chatter, asks John Rentoul

What else you need to know
|
- The Green Party is not viewed as being the party with the biggest problem with antisemitism, a new poll has shown, despite increasing pressure on Zack Polanski over his response to the Golders Green stabbing.
- Sir Keir Starmer is expected to use plans for closer ties with the European Union as part of an attempt to stave off a leadership challenge in the wake of Thursday’s local elections.
- A man has been arrested on suspicion of trying to sell Morgan McSweeney’s phone after it was stolen in October last year, which sparked concerns that key exchanges relating to Lord Peter Mandelson’s appointment could be lost.

|
If Starmer’s EU reset is so popular, why sell it after the elections?

I have written about the prime minister’s plan to deliver a speech on Monday setting out his plans for closer relations with the EU. If he thought it was a vote-winner, he would have given the speech before today’s elections, not afterwards.
The speech is a transparent attempt to fend off a leadership challenge after bad election results by throwing some red meat to the pro-EU majority in the Labour Party.

Zack Polanski falsely claimed to be British Red Cross spokesperson
|
Zack Polanski is facing calls to “come clean with the public” after he is said to have falsely claimed to be a spokesperson for the British Red Cross while crowdfunding his campaign to be deputy leader of the Green Party.
Here’s what you had to say:

|
The Corbynisation of Polanski is well under way, it is simply not acceptable to have someone from the Left being popular, let alone gain some power, so the smears start.

I'm still not sure whether to vote Green just to kick out Labour in my area. They do have a good chance. This does seem like desperation to discredit the Greens. It does not work for Reform and it will not work for the Greens

Keir Starmer vs the world: How the PM made his job so much harder |
We analyse how Starmer’s handling of the Mandelson vetting scandal has significantly weakened relations with the civil service, why putting a three-line whip on his own MPs is always a revealing move and why picking a political strategy is imperative if he wants to maintain his hold on power.
